When I once responded - in person - to an apartment ad in a tony New York neighborhood and was told that the apartment was "no longer available," I suspected racism, but couldn't be sure. I later found a better apartment.<BR/><BR/>When the woman who rented me a room during my junior year in Paris told me that many parisians wouldn't rent to blacks, I believed her. But it didn't really affect my experience in France. <BR/><BR/>I guess I agree more with McWhorter: There are two many other things to worry about while living a life to focus too much energy on seeing slights everywhere. Yet, it would be naive to forget that they are possible and to not be prepared to deal with them when they occur.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
