Myria-partite systems have their disadvantages too, but the fact that "independent" or "third-party" candidates have an almost impossible time getting elected to any significant office, and then have to align with one of the two main parties in order to have any influence is... evidence that something is fundamentally broken.Barry Leibahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14205294935881991457noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21503568.post-61122260829700603162009-06-18T09:15:22.451-04:002009-06-18T09:15:22.451-04:00Wow.

When I was young, I voted for a Republican, William Milliken, for Michigan's governor because he supported a woman's right to choose an abortion and the Democrat didn't. (That's hard to believe now, isn't it?)

I just googled it. I don't know who ran against him the time I voted for him, but the information on him is interesting. Here's a bit from the National Governor's Association (nga.org): His bipartisan, alliance-building style led him to court labor, occasionally appoint Democrats to state jobs, and support pro-choice legislation on abortion.

According to Wikipedia, he endorsed Kerry in '04, and after endorsing McCain in '08, backed away from that endorsement when McCain started attacking Obama.

If we ever get instant-runoff voting for the bigger elections, I'd be voting Green Party more consistently. If you had any 3rd party Senators, I wonder how they'd be handling this zoo.Sue VanHattumhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10237941346154683902noreply@blogger.com
