I saw the last 20 minutes of the debate and, like you, it was better than I expected. I felt like I'd actually learned something.

But then of course, again like you, I noticed there was little media focus on what the candidates' positions were, and the implications of that. Instead it reverted to "who won." Heck, I almost wrote a post about that myself, and had to sit myself down and have a talk about integrity!

Cheers,

James HanleyJames Hanleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18431950784819780004noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21503568.post-90433462226243471672008-09-29T12:11:00.000-04:002008-09-29T12:11:00.000-04:00Gloria Steinem wrote a great column about this man...Gloria Steinem wrote a great column about this many years ago, probably back in the Reagan era, maybe before. I'm too lazy to look it up now. But she pointed out that this "winning" obsession is a male thing (of course women also fall into the habit, but she's talking about its genesis).

I agree that talking about who "won" or "lost" a political debate is inane. Which is why, against my better judgment, I started to watch Friday night's debate, then forced myself to hang on for 15 minutes, then left in disgust. It was meaningless. If people don't know by this late date what the differences are between two such opposite candidates, with such opposite philosophies, then they've been living in a cave. And aren't smart enough to be voting anyway. (But, of course, they will vote. That's how we got Our Fearless Leader for the past 8 years.)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
