Katherine "Wingnut" Harris strikes again

Hoo, boy!

According to the Orlando Sentinel, published here in the WaPo, Rep. Katherine Harris denounced the tenet of separation of church and state as a "lie", made claims about what God does and doesn't want for America, and said that we must elect only Christian legislators. It doesn't get much loonier than this:

ORLANDO, Aug. 25 — Rep. Katherine Harris (R-Fla.) said this week that God did not intend for the United States to be a "nation of secular laws" and that the separation of church and state is a "lie we have been told" to keep religious people out of politics.

"If you're not electing Christians, then in essence you are going to legislate sin," Harris told interviewers from the Florida Baptist Witness, the weekly journal of the Florida Baptist State Convention. She cited abortion and same-sex marriage as examples of that sin.
And then she continues:
Harris told the journalists "we have to have the faithful in government" because that is God's will. Separating religion and politics is "so wrong because God is the one who chooses our rulers," she said.

"And if we are the ones not actively involved in electing those godly men and women," then "we're going to have a nation of secular laws. That's not what our Founding Fathers intended, and that certainly isn't what God intended."

Perhaps you'll recall that Ms Harris was Florida's Secretary of State during the 2000 presidential election and chaired George Bush's campaign in Florida. In the former capacity, she was instrumental in stonewalling the recounts and keeping Bush ahead despite obvious irregularities in the voting and vote counting. She had to defend herself for that. One wonders whether she'll be defending herself now. After what she said this week, can there be anyone who thinks she did her job impartially in 2000, and was not bent on making sure the Idiot-in-Chief ascended to the White House at any cost?

We have got to get these nutjobs out of office!

Update, 28 Aug: Here's a link to the original interview in Florida Baptist Witness (in case you don't mind giving them "hit" traffic), and here's what PZ Myers has to say about it on Pharyngula.

We can only hope and pray she has killed herself politically, that these latest statements have opened some eyes but I doubt it. The christian idiots down here in Florida are stupid enough to actually believe that kind of hogwash because it says they don't have to take responsibility for themselves. Personally, I take Monty Pythons view of God.
