Earth Day, belated

Having not done an Earth Day post yesterday, I've decided to point y'all at Rocketboom's Earth Day entry from Friday. It covers one of my biggest peeves: overpackaging. Do watch it through to the end. Enjoy.

I believe 'enjoy' was the wrong word. However, I absolutely agree with you about the insanity that is packaging these days, and she demonstrated the prime example: that horrid plastic shell that is next to impossible to open except with heavy-duty scissors, and which then ends up with sharp edges and points that are capable of serious bodily damage. I loathe and detest such packaging with a passion.

Is there really any justification for all that additional garbage? I'd love to buy things that don't have it, but the reality seems to be that there's no choice. What is one to do?

I think the justification for the horrid plastic shell is that it's manufactured and sealed entirely automatically, so it streamlines the packaging process. And it displays well in the store. Much as you (and I) might prefer the box with the inserts and the shrink-wrapping, that's a more expensive process.

I wonder if either of you has ever tried to liberate a Barbie or Cabbage Patch Kid from her packaging. They twisty-tie the limbs into place so the doll appears to be engaged in an activity, and the hair is fastened down just-so with this weird plastic piece that's sewn to the hair and the box. The sharp plastic bubble stuff is reserved for accessories. It's a nightmare.

My plan to do an Earth Day post fell through. I wanted to be green and recycle last year's post. Then I realized I didn't post about Earth Day last year.

He-he-he...
I notice that my post from last year's Earth Day was about legalizing marijuana.

Hmmmm....
