I can only assume it's supposed to be some clever allegory, since the word STRAIGHT does indeed contain letters composed of CROOKED (not to mention BENT) LINES. But I'm not at all sure what I'm supposed to infer from that.

Had it been BUSH or CHENEY instead of STRAIGHT, then it would have been both clearer and more apt.

No, never seen it before. And now that I see an explanation, I think it's one of the most strained metaphors I've seen.
