Lions on Madagascar?

On my recent flight home from San Francisco, the movie shown on the plane was Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa. I haven’t seen the popular Madagascar films, and I didn’t watch the one on the plane, except to glance up at it from time to time. I noted that some of the main characters are lions and zebras.

Hm, said I, lions do not live on Madagascar, at least not wild ones. Nor do zebras. Madagascar is an island, the fourth largest in the world. The wild lions and zebras in Africa had no way to migrate from the mainland to the island off the coast of Mozambique (where these animals do, indeed, live in the wild).

Though the Bronx Zoo has renovated the old Lion House as a Madagascar wildlife exhibit, there’s no connection between Madagascar and lions (and there are no lions in the new Madagascar house in the Bronx — lemurs, fossas, crocodiles, and other animals, but no lions, and no zebras).

But I suppose that lions also do not speak and are not bipedal, so I shouldn’t be too picky about points of habitat, should I?

Since we're being pedantic, you only wrote your lines 2.5 times...

Of course, the lion came from a zoo in America and not from Madagascar, so it's moot.

As I said, I didn't watch it, so I missed that aspect of the plot. But there was a whole herd of zebras. Was none of that in Madagascar either? Whence comes the title?

To be fair to the movie (and to be fair to you, you couldn't have known this without actually watching the movie), all of the Lions and Zebras seen in Madagascar (the island), in Madagascar (the film), were part of a wildlife reserve.

I didn't watch the movie either, but my greatniece loved the first one. I just know the lion and his friends were from a zoo, and he'd never actually killed anything in his life... There was something about some penguins trying to escape the zoo and the others ended up going along. I didn't pay that much attention, I'm forced to admit.

It's very amusing to read an argument over a movie nobody here has seen :D

Well, hey, on the Internet, people spend lots of time holding forth about things they know nothing about. Seems part of the culture.

It's amusing to me that some of the posts that get the most comments are the ones I label with "Whimsy". Maybe I should do more of that, keep everyone amused.

I appear to be the only one here who has actually seen this movie. Please allow this situation to stand. I willingly agree to have suffered for all of you. None of you need subject yourselves to this punishment, as I have already done so.

The penguins are the best part, and apparently have their own TV show now.

The chimps were also hysterical (they stage a strike at one point!).

The lead characters and the overall script left much to be desired.

I have now seen the second movie (blame it on my grandniece). The zebras you're referring to aren't in Madagascar, but Kenya or Tanzania, someplace like that. That's why it's called Escape 2 Africa, get it? They escaped from Madagascar.

So despite all the other stuff there is to quibble at (like the bipedalism, the dancing, the lion apparently able to get seafood in Kenya, the giraffe in love with the hippo, the huge size of the pride, all the animals with hooves somehow managing to carry things around...) at least they got that much right. On Madagascar there were lemurs and fossa...

Bear in the Big Blue House is/was Disney, and the moon ("Luna") would rise every night at sundown. That aggravated the b'jeezers out of me.

It's not a Disney film. It's from Dreamworks and Paramount.
