Is it art?

Modern art at the Czech National GalleryThe item to the right (click it to enlarge) is on display at the Czech National Gallery at Veletržní Palác. As you can see, it comprises two white-painted wooden chairs that are tied together with rope.

There’s lots of other stuff at the (very extensive and interesting) gallery for which I don’t have to ask this question, but for this piece, here it is: Is it art?

What do you think?

Is it art? To quote Humpty Dumpty: 'When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, 'it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.'

This reminds me of the time in the early 90s when a group of us was working in Boeblingen, where one weekend we visited the art museum in Stuttgart. We entered one hall where it was obvious that some renovation was taking place, since there was a pile of rubble - concrete, bricks, dust, and so on - in the middle of the floor. We thought it strange that they hadn't bothered to clear it away. We thought it even more strange when we saw the accompanying poster, describing it as some exotic work of art. Humpty Dumpty taken to its extreme!

I come from the olde schoole in which we believe that the artist should Say Something. I don't have to agree with it - but a message should be there.

These chairs and twine strike me as being from the newe schoole in which the viewer is supposed to take from the art whatever message they wish. I believe the artists in this newe schoole have abdicated their responsibility. If they have nothing to say, they should just shut up. And take their stuff with them.

Seems to me to be a statement about the current dialog between the parties in Congress...or maybe it is a love seat designed by a committee?
