Happy Eltonmas

Today is Sir Elton John’s birthday; he’s 64. Here are two of my favourites of his songs. Enjoy the next eleven and a half minutes.

Yes, Barry, I remember that you always liked Elton. So did I, although when he rose to superstar status in the mid-70s he was a little bit too much to take at times. My favorite songs of his are Tiny Dancer, Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding, and Can You Feel the Love Tonight. I also thought that the video he made in 1983 for I'm Still Standing was pretty good, too.

Yes, I was also put off for a while, during the Caribou and Captain Fantastic days. I saw him at the Hollywood Sportatorium (the "Distortatorium") in 1973, when Don't Shoot Me... I'm Only the Piano Player came out, and it was a great concert. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road came out later that year, and was the beginning of the excess, and then there was Caribou in '74, and he'd gone totally over the top.

But even those "excess" albums had one great song on each: "Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me" and "Someone Saved My Life Tonight", respectively.

He got better, though, with 1976's Blue Moves.
